The Greater Good is released next week and it’s the next Psychic Awakening book. As you can guess from the title it features the Tau, as well as Astra Militarum and Genestealer Cults.
In the next part of the Psychic Awakening Series we see a definite step away from the Space Marines and instead a focus on a few of the other factions. The Astra Militarum of the Chalnath Expanse, the Genestealer Cults and the Tau. With the Chalnath Expanse cut off from the Imperium by the Great Rift, many worlds are under attack from Genestealer Cult Uprisings.
At first the overtures of the Tau, in helping the Imperial Forces seems welcoming. Until they slaughtered Astra Militarum forces with as much ease as they took care of the Genestealer Cults.
This action sets force a three way battle. Between the forces of the Astra MIlitarum, the Greater Good of the Tau and the Genestealer Cults. Although the story does move quite swiftly in the book. The reunification of the remainder of the Fourth Expansions forces back into the Tau is a little rocky, the story seems more gritty than the previous books. As always there is no clear victor at the end of the book. With the fate of what is left of the Chalnath Expanse being left solely in the hands of the players.
Genestealer Cults being a major player in the book get an errata to Codex: Genestealer Cults as well as some new rules, Psychic powers and rules for creating custom Cult Creeds.
The new Cult Creeds can be combined to form your forces own dogma, subculture and battle doctrines for your unique forces of the Star Children. You can get a boost for Armour Piercing, Morale or various other special rules. Being able to select two means you can either really go over the top on a theme or do something a bit more generic.
The back bone of the Imperiums forces, well the most numerous are the human portion of its forces. These are also stationed on most of the Planets as a planetary defence force.
Much like the Genestealer Cults the Astra Militarum get new Regimental Doctrines with can be combined to give a unique feel to your force. Also new rules for upgrading your tanks to veterans to represent the battle hardened tanks of their forces.
There is also a dedicated supplement to allow you to field the elite Ordo Tempestus as well.
The Greater Good
With a title like The Greater Good, you can expect the Tau feature very heavily.
As a supplement to Codex Tau this is actually quite a lot. You get a name generator, an updated datasheet for Commander Shadowsun. Sept Tenets is you wish to build your own Sept. But that’s not all, you also will now be able to field advanced prototype weapons systems as well. Along with new stratagems to go with them.
Finally we also have rules to enable you to fully field Farsight Enclaves. Including the monstrous detachment known as The Eight. Yes for just a mere 1120 points you can field The Eight as a Super-Heavy Auxiliary Detachment. For me this is actually quite a tempting prospect. I dabbled a little with the Tau when I first started playing Warhammer 40k.
So for all you Tau players there is a lot of stuff in the Greater Good. For Astra Militarum there is a bit and for Genestealer Cultists there is a little less. There is definitely a rather unfortunate lean on the Tau but I guess that was to be expected with the title and the story line. But everyone gains a little something from the latest release.
