Bolt Action: Afrika Korp Project

Part 1: So it begins

People often stop me in the street and say “Craig where do you get your army ideas from? (True story this happened once, I accept that I was standing outside a war games store where I was running a Bolt Action tournament, but nevertheless it happened)  The simple answer is I pour over my history book collections for a person or event I want to build my force around.  My winter Germans are based on Panzer Lehr’s involvement in the Ardennes offensive.  When the lovely Paul Walker from WarHQ approached me with the idea of building an army with the support from him and Rubicon Models I knew that this was the beginning of a new army.

A quick look at Rubicon’s range of kits and my mind was made up I was going to build a new German army, but what to build?  To the books Batman, an evening of reading and many cups of tea later and I had chosen my new army.  The Afrika Korp and in particular Hans Von Lucks Reconnaissance Battalion who were the eyes and ears of the Desert Fox.

To start I decided that I was going to build a 1250 points list based off of a standard reinforced platoon rather than a theatre selector so that I can play this list at any type of event.  Now I need a theme for the army and the voice in my head screamed TANKS!!  The problem is that if I include tanks then the army risks becoming a beige version of my winter Germans.  Looking over the great range of kits on the Rubicon website I noticed that they have a large number of Hanomags and the other armour carriers that the Germans used in World War Two.  With this idea of a motorized army in mind I wrote the following list, this hopefully will stop my gamer shiny thing syndrome from kicking in and making me buy everything.

1 x Regular 1st Lt with buddy and sub machine gun

1 x Regular 250/1 Neu

8 x Regular Heer with sub machine gun & Light machine gun

1 x Regular 251/1 Hanomag

    • Very true the Pak43 was introduced in 1943 which is close the last gasps of the Afrika Korp before the retreat to mainland Europe. The army is not 100% historically accurate more like a nod to it.

  1. the flak18/36 would most likely be emplaced unless BA has come up with rules for shooting while limbered, which they could do.

    • No rules for limbered shooting, but its just such an iconic Afrika Korp unit i had to include one and the new rules for HE with AT style guns make it really useful.
